{colouring tutorial}

1) First I take pic of Hayden Panettiere.

2) If you're colouring a bigger pic, I would suggest smoothing it out first. If you're colouring an icon, I'd suggest sharpening it once. And if the pic is dark you'd probably need to brighten it up.

And now for the colouring...

3) Add an adjustment layer for colour balance (layer>new adjustment layer>color balance). For midtones, the settings are: 0, -10, -13.

4) On top of that add an adjustment layer for Brightness/Contrast, +7 for brightness and +7 for contrast.

This is what it looks like now.

5) On top of that add another adjustment layer for colour balance. Settings for midtones are: -23, +12, +19.

This is what it looks like now.

6) On top of that add an adjsutment layer for selective colour. Settings are:
Reds= Cyan: +100%
Yellows= Cyan: +100%, Yellow: -100%
Greens= Magenta: +100%
Cyans= Cyan: -100%, Magenta: -43%
Whites= Cyan: +79%, Magenta: -34%, Yellow: +45%, Black: -25%
Neutrals= Cyan: -10%, Magenta: -13%, Yellow: +13%, Black: -5%

This is what it looks like now.

7) On top of that add another adjustment layer for selective colour. Settings are:
Reds= Cyan: -100%, Magenta: +60%, Yellow: +70%, Black: +70%
Yellows= Cyan: -100%, Yellow: +35%
Cyans= Cyan: +100%
Whites= Black: +47%
Neutrals= Cyan: +54%, Yellow: -27%, Black, +9%

This is what it looks like now.

8) Then another adjustment layer for colour balance on top. Settings for midtones are: +13, -9, 0

This is what it looks like now.

9) Then add an adjustment layer for Hue/Saturation. Set the master saturation to +15.

This is what it looks like now.

10) Remember, that all pictures start off differently, so you may need to adjust and customize certain settings to go along with your pic.

And this colouring tutorial can be used to make icons too, here are some examples of icons I made using these settings:
